Recommended Dosage: 2-3 Capsules, twice a day (Fat Loss)

Container Size: 120 Capsules

Number of Servings per Container: 40-60

Cost for 4 Weeks of Use**: £37.32 to £55.99

Manufacturers Principal Claims:

“LIPO-6 by Nutrex is the first and only fat-burner that utilizes maximum strength liquid capsules for superior absorption and unprecedented results”

Product Description:

Nutrex Lipo 6 is a thermogenic fat loss supplement, thyroid stimulator and energy supplement. The supplement is in capsule form, with the ingredients delivered in liquid form.

Ingredient Profile:

Synephrine HCL 20mg: Synephrine is a drug used primarily fat loss, although the effectiveness is debated it is very popular and has been used as an alternative to ephedrine (a substance with a history of controversy). Synephrine is derived primarily from the fruit of a small citrus tree.

Synthetic 99% Guggulsterones Z&E 1:1 20mg: Herbal Guggulsterones are formed from the extract from a tree, traditionally Grown in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Guggul is the tree which produces a resinous sap, this has been used for hundreds of years in traditional Indian medicine. In Modern medicine this sap is standardised for the active components Z and E guggulsterones. Guggulsterones have been shown to stimulate the thyroid gland, converting T4 into T3. The Guggulsterones included in Lipo 6 are synthetic, this should allow for greater purity and a more accurate dosage.

Yohimbe HCL 3mg: Yohimbine is a selective competitive alpha2-adrenergic receptor antagonist. In many countries it is a prescription drug and has a variety of uses for treatment of erectile dysfunction, weight loss, treatment of low blood pressure and to dilate the pupil of the eye. It is also claimed to be an aphrodisiac. It is used in weight loss supplements as it increases noradrenaline (norepinephrine) levels, one of the body’s lipolytic (meaning to disintegrate fat) hormones.

Caffeine Anhydrous USP 200mg: Caffeine acts as a stimulant and thermogenic in humans, and is commonly taken to boost energy or mental concentration. It will stimulate the central nervous system and the metabolism. Once metabolised caffeine can increase lipolysis in the body. Caffeine may also increase the effectiveness of other substances such as ephedrine or Yohimbe, and was incredibly popular in the commonly used ECA stack (ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin).

Bioperine 5mg: Derived from the fruit of the piper nigrum plant (black pepper) or piper longum (long pepper). It is believed to have thermogenic properties. Supplementation of piperidine enhances the bioavailability of various nutrients, including beta-carotene, curcumin, selenium, pyridoxine and coenzyme Q10.

By: Bercle George
Others find rose gardening, or just plain gardening a delight within itself. At its simplest, rose gardening consists of five parts, or five “Ps”: Plan, Prepare, Plant, Prune, and Protect. Whatever it is your purpose for doing rose gardening, if you’re still a beginner, you have to know a few things first. Rose gardening is not a simple task, you don’t happen to notice roses grow just about anywhere, don’t you?

Roses like six hours of sunshine where possible and shelter from cold winds. Roses are thirsty When healthy, roses in your garden will exude byproducts that attract organisms in the soil that allow the garden to maintain a balance.

Roses need good nutrition. But before a rose becomes a bloom that has the power over many, it has to begin somewhere as a plain and innocent bud, unnoticed and enjoying its life along with the other buds. With careful planning and good maintenance, you can enjoy a beautiful blooming garden that your friends and neighbors will admire.

Some Gardening Tools:

-Gardening gloves should normally be thick and durable, so that when you are gardening, the thorns should not penetrate through them.

-When choosing shovels for the garden, it is important to choose models that are lightweight and easy to work with.

-One of the chief components of any rose plant are the thorns, so a strong pair of gardening gloves is an essential part of any rose gardening kit.

-Choose a garden rake with sharp, closely spaced metal tines rather than a leaf rake with widely spaced tines.

-Shears generally fall into two categories, only one of which should be used in rose gardening.

Some Tips For Rose Gardening:

- You have to take into consideration factors like growing conditions, garden size etc.

- There’s also a lot of important ongoing maintenance that you need to do, to keep your rose garden in top condition.

- Roots should never, ever be exposed; cold weather can be fatal to your roses.

- A rose bed should be cleaned and trimmed on a routine basis.

- You need to pick garden roses that have natural strength and with reputations for superior performance in the garden.

Some Rose Gardening Tips Resources:

- Even if you’re more experienced with gardening in general, or roses in particular, you can gain a great deal from rose gardening books.

- If you prefer the old-fashioned method of research and help, you can visit the library.

- The internet contains discussion forums on almost any topic, including rose gardening.

- While you could visit your local library and index books, magazines, and other periodicals, the internet is now the information superhighway, where you are guaranteed to find information related to your search on gardening help.

- There are several sites around the world dedicated to rose gardening, and these collect articles, web blogs, and other various information on roses, cultivation of the garden, and various problems that may arise.

Some Rose Variety:

-The Setigera variety of rose, known to the scientific community as R.

-The setigera rose has been used in breeding programs to create many very hardy varieties of climbing roses, most notably the crosses with the Noisettes and Gallicas varieties.

-Boursault roses are of the climbing variety, and they are said to be the result of a cross between an early variety of China rose and the R.

By: Douglas Taylor
The tomato is an essential part of my vegetable garden every year. I plan the rest of my garden around my tomatoes. They are that important to many gardeners. One thing about planting tomatoes is they are not that hard to grow. Add some tender loving care and a little water and compost and you should be enjoying this wonderful plants harvest before you know it.

By following a few simple steps you will be well on your way to a great tomato season. Start by deciding whether you want to start your plants from seed or by buying plants at your local nursery. Next you should pick a few different varieties so your harvest will not all come at the same time. Put your plants in a spot that will get plenty of sun and add some compost or fertilizer. This article will look at a few ways to increase your chances of having a better tomato harvest.

You will have plenty of choices when you decide to plant a few tomatoes. The first decision you need to make is to decide if you want to start your plants from seed or buy plants. There are good reasons to go either way. Planting from seed will save you some money, as a pack of seed will usually cost less than tomato plants. You also will generally have a better choice of different varieties when starting from seed. Planting tomatoes that you buy from your local nursery has some advantages as well. You only need to plant the best looking plants you can find. Seeing how green and lush a plant is will help you pick out the best ones.

I like to plant a few different types of tomatoes plants. This will extend my harvest because I always pick a few plants that produce fruit early and a few more that come later in the growing season. I also always add a couple of cherry tomato plants to my garden as well.

Picking your gardening spot is very important. Your gardens success or failure may depend on where it is. You will need to plant somewhere that gets a lot of sun. My plants seem to do better if they are in a spot that gets least six hours of sun each day. I think more is better in the case of tomatoes. Make sure your planting spot can be watered without a lot of trouble. When you do not get an inch of rain a week you will need to water your plants so they can thrive.

Planting tomatoes is a very satisfying thing to do. Follow a good plan and you should be enjoying the fruits of your labor well into the fall.

By: Abhishek Agarwal
So you have decided that you want a garden! Well then, you need to start looking for the right kind of gardening tools to help you get started. A local hardware store should provide all that you need. Oh yes, do bear in mind that wintertime is not really the best time to start a garden – it is better to wait for summer to begin. And stores usually set up a sale of goods once winter comes to an end.

There are some gardening tools that can be classified as essential tools, especially for a beginner. What are these?

(1) The first thing you need is a shovel. If it has a round and pointed blade, all the more better because its function is to dig and move the soil around.

(2) For putting in small plants, you would need a smaller tool called the trowel. Since you would have to adopt a kneeling down posture, it is easier to use this tool for digging rather than the bigger shovel. If you get a little dirty in the process, never mind!

(3) The soil will have to be broken up before you begin planting. Use a garden fork which is small and very easy to handle.

(4) All plants need water, especially newly planted ones. So absolutely necessary gardening tools that you cannot do without are hoses! Buy one that need not be moved around and can reach all plants from the same tap.

(5) Your garden may already have some well-grown plants. Pruners, or what are commonly referred to as large scissors, will help in removing the dead parts of the plants. This ensures that the plants stay alive for a longer time and grow well.

(6) Some uninvited guests to any garden are “weeds”! A gardening tool known as hoe (has a flat blade) will get rid of them quickly!

(7) Sometimes, you may find large trees already present in the front yard of the new house you have moved into. The yard gets filled up with fallen leaves in fall season. A rake would be necessary to clean up the place.

(8) A leaf blower could be added to your store, to clear up the extra leaves which have not been picked up by a rake. Actually, the leaf blower can be used by itself as it functions faster.

Now that you have collected all your gardening tools, how do you ensure that they stay ‘in condition’ for a longer time?

(1) Every tool has to be cleaned after use and before it is put back in storage. The tools will remain functional.

(2) The tools have to be put away during wintertime.

(3) Before storing them for the winter season, coat the tools with oil or wax. Moisture will not affect them.

(4) With the return of spring, your gardening tools are ready to be employed again. The screws on the tools have to be tightened before use. This is a practice which should be followed regularly every gardening season.

A few last tips:

(1) Every species of plant has to be treated differently. So do collect information about each one before planting them.

(2) Do not keep too tight a budget when it comes to gardening tools. Have a long-term vision and do not grudge spending just that little bit extra.

(3) Forged tools are longer-lasting than ordinary tools, though they are more expensive.

“He who makes his companions laugh deserves Paradise.”

The store customer really loved the pair of shoes that the salesman showed to him but, on trying them on he found that they were much too tight. “No problem,” said the salesman. “Just wait here for a few minutes.” The salesman then gave the shoes to one of his assistants who proceeded to run up and down the stairs for the next twenty minutes. When the assistant returned, the salesman gave them to the customer to try on and he agreed that they now fitted perfectly. IF THE SHOE WEARS, FIT IT.

During the French revolution, the peasants captured a rich Count. They tortured him, trying to get him to reveal where his treasure was stashed but he would not tell them. They decided to scare him just enough to get him to talk so they led him out to the guillotine and placed his head on the slab. They told him that they would kill him if he didn’t answer but one of the guards accidentally pulled the rope and the Count was killed proving that you should NEVER HACHET YOUR COUNTS UNTIL THEY’RE CHICKEN

In Canada a dentist used to go fishing in a stream frequented by dangerous grisly bears. When asked how it was that he was never attacked he replied that he injected some fish with sedatives and threw them to the animals, adding THERE’S SAFETY IN NUMB BEARS

There was a small country where the king was overthrown. After the revolution, the people were searching for him because he had gone into hiding. One of his close friends allowed him to hide in the greenhouse of his country home. The king had insisted on taking his gold throne with him and enjoyed sitting in it in the greenhouse, thinking of better times. One day a passing peasant noticed him and reported him to the authorities. The king was arrested and executed which goes to show that PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN’T STOW THRONES.

In Saudi Arabia a company was prospecting for oil and instructed the manager to check ten wells. The manager started with the first well and came up with nothing. The same with the next and the next etc for several months until at the last well he finally struck oil. He thought that the boss would be happy with him but instead he was fired. The boss told him that he had wasted too much time because he should have known that THE OIL WELL ‘S THAT END WELL.

President Bush visited a naval station to inspect a new warship and expected to receive a hero’s welcome. Instead he was booed and given rude signals by the whole crew. He was so incensed that he ordered two crew members to be immediately sent to solitary. The rest of the crew was not discouraged. They insisted that it was WORTH TWO HANDS TO GIVE BUSH THE BIRD.

A rich man had a lot of sympathy for the Spanish Basques. On a visit to one of their enclaves, he offered to build them a large auditorium where they could hold meetings etc. As soon as the building was completed they held an opening ceremony there and the place was packed. During the ceremony, somehow a fire started and in the ensuing panic many people were killed trying to get out through the front door which was the only way in or out. One should remember to NEVER PUT ALL YOUR BASQUES IN ONE EXIT.

The prince was given a magic goblet by a friendly wizard. “Remember.” he was told. “This goblet will dispense magic potions and will be your assistant in running the country but it will not work until you are proclaimed king because IT NEVER POURS UNTIL IT REIGNS.”

The millionaire’s wife was late for her hair appointment so hired a helicopter to rush her into town. As she remarked, “THE WHIRLY BIRD GETS THE PERM.”

The local headmaster had political ambitions and borrowed heavily to make a run for office. Unfortunately nobody voted for him and he ended up losing his home and all his possessions. HE SHOULD HAVE QUIT WHILE HE WAS A HEAD.

It appears that having sex uses about the same amount of energy as a long brisk walk so remember… A MISS IS AS GOOD AS A MILE.

Peter Wise and his wife Penny were walking through a bad area of town when a man mistook her for a rival gang member and started to beat up on her. Her husband drew out a gun and told the man that he had made a mistake and said that it was FOOLISH TO POUND PENNY WISE.

Mick Jagger was strolling across the brow of a hill when he spied Kate Moss below. Trying to impress her, he lay down and rolled down the hill arriving at her feet. Kate

was not impressed and just strode away from him. You see A ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS.

One of the studio underlings was insanely jealous of the star singer.

He decided to substitute his throat medicine with water so that he would be unable to perform. However the star’s voice was not unduly affected so the show went on normally. You see YOU CAN HAVE THE LEAD DRINK WATER BUT YOU CAN’T MAKE HIM HOARSE.

The airport traffic was severely disrupted when the blonde, female controller failed to turn up at the tower but instead was seen walking around below holding up an “ON STRIKE” placard. The manager went down to talk to her. “What is it with you Mary?’ he complained. “Our union went to arbitration and got a good salary for you and we have a nice bunch of people here working with you. What exactly is your problem?”

“Well, explained the girl,” I was doing my laundry early this morning and at the same time reading the pamphlet that you gave to us about work attitudes. I read about keeping your best foot forward and your shoulder to the wheel and then I came to STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT

Albert Ree was a nice fellow who was a photographer for a major magazine. On an assignment to the jungle of Colombia he disappeared. Several search parties were organized but to no avail. Several years later, another photographer who knew Albert slightly was working in the same area. Straying from the beaten path in search of anything interesting, he wandered into a clearing where he spied a man feeding the chickens. Although this man had a long beard it was obvious that this was in fact Albert. The photographer rushed up to him joyfully proclaiming “AH, SWEET MISTER REE OF LIFE, AT LAST I’VE FOUND YOU.”

A burglar broke into a house looking for money. He noticed a cupboard with many gold chains in it. He opened the unlocked cupboard and grabbed the gold but was unaware that it was connected to a high voltage source which immediately zapped him. When he woke up the house owner was standing over him and said “SORRY, IT’S BETTER THAN TO BE A SAFE.”

Two men were on a small boat on the high seas when it capsized and sank. They both managed to swim ashore but to two different islands. One man was hated by his family and when they heard he was missing, celebrated and didn’t lift a finger to help him. The other man was adored by HIS family and they raised enough money to search for him until he was found. You see IT’S BETTER TO BE LOST AND LOVED THAN NOT TO HAVE BEEN LOVED AT ALL

He staggered over to the door, fumbled with the lock and let her in. “What’s your name?” he enquired. My name is Dawn,” the girl replied. “I might have guessed,” muttered the man. “IT’S ALWAYS DARKEST BEFORE DAWN.”

After he broke up with his girlfriend, she ran her truck into his car, shot his dog and then set fire to his house. Attempting to locate his ex, the man went with the police to the girl’s mother and explained to her what had happened. She wouldn’t believe that her daughter had done such a thing, telling him “Hell, a woman scorned hath no fury like that.”

Witnesses were not sure whether it was the lion or the lioness that ate the man, so the investigators decided to use an x-ray. Their final decision was that it was in fact the lion that was responsible. You could say that THE CZECH IS IN THE MALE.

The king was holding court surrounded by his jesters. One of his enemies attempted to assassinate him, firing an arrow from the tower but hit one of the jesters by mistake. As the king said, your must KEEP YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU

A man was driving down a country road, when his car hit a large rabbit. He got out of the car and saw the animal writhing on the ground. He couldn’t decide whether to try to help it or to kill it and put it out of its misery. Just then another driver stopped his car and came over. He took one look and went back to his car and returned with a bottle and fed the contents into the rabbit’s mouth. Immediately the animal jumped up and ran off into the woods.

“That’s fantastic,” exclaimed the first man. “You must be a veterinarian. What did you give the rabbit?”

“Actually,” came the reply, “I’m a hairdresser,” as he showed him the bottle of HAIR RESTORER.

A man visited a fortune teller and held out his palms to be read. “I have some good news for you,” smiled the gypsy. “You are going to come into a lot of money today!” The man stood up and slapped the woman across the face. “What the hell are you doing?” she demanded. “Well,” replied the man calmly, “I was always told to STRIKE A HAPPY MEDIUM.”

By: Anna Hart
Every spring, whether northern or southern hemisphere, many people begin to think about gardening. Some have been gardening every year since they were old enough to help in the family garden back of the house. Others have begun gardening only recently. Most have questions, though.

How to make an organic garden is a question that arises more frequently these days, as people become more concerned about health issues. They want to know that the produce they are eating is good for their health and safe for their families to eat. They want to begin an organic garden.

Many books have been written about how to make an organic garden, and we cannot compete with them in one article, but we offer here 7 basic steps for beginners.

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #1

Begin your organic garden by learning your plant hardiness zone. You will need to know your climate, and what organic produce will grow best there. If you live in the United States, you can access the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map on many gardening sites or seed websites. Planting directions on seed packets are based on the average last frost date. The last frost date for your area will be the last spring day when you might have a killing frost.

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #2

After you have determined your local climate, it is time to choose a location on your property for your organic garden. The area most convenient to your back door may not be the best for an organic garden. Look for a location that never has standing water. Your plants need good soil drainage. Check to see if the plants will be protected from the wind. Will your organic garden be close to water so you can easily care for it?

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #3

Next, you will need to test the soil for your organic garden. In the U.S., check online for your county or state Home/Agricultural Extension Service. They will guide you in taking soil samples from different areas of the location you chose for your organic garden. Be sure you label each sample of soil as to part of the garden, and send it to be analyzed. This analysis will help you know what to add to the soil for a great harvest. Remember, one of the basic things you will do in your organic garden is to feed the soil so the soil can feed the plants.

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #4

Order seeds, using information about your climate and soil. Be sure you order certified organic seed so that you can have an authentic organic garden. A good online seed supply source is Main Street Seed and Supply. You can buy as little as a teaspoon of seed for a small organic garden, or pounds of organic seed for farming. While ordering seeds, be sure to include onions, garlic, and marigold flowers. These plants can be a first line of defense in an organic garden’s pest control program.

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #5

While you wait for your seeds to arrive, you need to prepare the organic garden bed. If there is grass growing in the location, removed it first. Use a sharp, flat-edged spade to slice out the sod. Shake off as much soil as you can, and remove the grass from the area. Till the soil to a depth of about 12″, and work in organic fertilizer, checking your soil analysis to know what amendments are needed.

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #6

If you have organic seedlings to plant, water them well the day before you intend to plant them in the organic garden. The best time to set them in the garden is a still, overcast day. If you must plant on a sunny day, take care not to stress the plants more than necessary. Use the seedlings’ pots to determine how deeply to plant them.

If you are planting seeds in your organic garden, follow instructions that come with each type of seed.

How to Make an Organic Garden – Step #7

Apply organic mulch soon after planting. Mulch conserves water, cools soil, and keeps weeds at bay. If you use compost, chipped bark, shredded bark, shredded, shredded leaves, or straw, your mulch will also improve soil quality in your organic garden. Apply 2 to 4 inches of mulch, being careful not to get it too close to the plant stems. Mulch can rot the stems. It can also become a hideout for nibbling little garden mice.

Organic Garden Tip:

Label your plant rows and keep a record of your garden’s progress. Save seed information for everything in your organic garden. A garden journal, with photos throughout the gardening season, will help you know what you want to repeat or change in next year’s organic garden.

There are indeed a handful of cafes and souvenir shops beside the abbey, and even a restaurant inside it, but they can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and the narrow streets of the village will scarcely permit more than this. Parking can sometimes be a little tricky as a result, though there is also a large open parking area just beyond the abbey. Beware of sitting under the famous ‘Tree of Idleness’, an ancient mulberry by the abbey entrance, lest you are struck down with the indolence for which the villagers are famed. Bellapais, Durrell was told, was synonymous with laziness and the villagers lived for so long that even the gravedigger was out of a job.

At least two hours should be allowed for the visit, starting from Girne, and the most special time is sunset, when the place is alive with the glowing silhouettes of arches. ‘The dawns and the sunsets in Cyprus,’ wrote Durrell, ‘are unforgettable-better even than those of Rhodes which I always bel?eved were un?que in their slow Tiberian magnificence. ‘ Durrell himself would frequently see the dawn, for when he ran out of money for renovating his house, he took a job teaching English in a Lefko?a school which meant he had to get up at 04.30.Entry to the abbey is by ticket and the kiosk is open 09.00-18.30. If you are especially fortunate, you might coincide with one of the concerts occasionally held in the abbey refectory: a more picturesque dinner at one of the nearby restaurants, and soak up the abbey, illuminated in its own surrealistic halo. Sipping wine on the terrace, you may wonder if yoy are hallucinating as a tractor trundles by towing a grand piano.Touring Bellapais Abbey

‘Bellapais’ is actually a corruption of ‘Abbaye de la Paix’, or Abbey of Peace. Climbing the 5km(3mile) drive from Girne through olive and carob groves and ever-increasing development, few are prepared for the vista that that hits them as they round the last corner before Bellapais village. There, rising up from the mountain on its natural terrace, like a mirage, is the Gothic masterpiece of the island, and indeed of all the Levant. Rerely has a place so lived up to its name, for this remarkable 14th-century abbey is imbued with a sense of tranquility and peace so powerful it is almost tangible. The road winds through the narrow streets of Bellapais village to reach the tiny square in front of the abbey. From here the path leads in from the ticket kiosk past the main entrance of the church to the abbey enclosure through a pretty and colourful garden, to what was once the abbey kitchen, and is now a restaurant and café, tastefully tucked into the side and with excellent views of the abbey and down over the coastline. In the abbey courtyard, the fine penciled cypress trees, ‘emblems of grief and eternity’ as eminent travel writer Colin Thubron called them, were only planted in 1940, but now they are home to hundreds of sparrows whose incessant chirping is usually the only sound to greet you as you enter.

Thoughtfully placed at the refectory door, by the lovely tracery windows of the cloister, lies a fine white marble sarcophagus of the 2nd century AD, carved with dainty figures and foliage. Here, the fastidious monks would wash their hands before meals. The first monks here were Augustinians, displaced from their custody of the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem by the arrival of Saladin in 1187. Fleeing with them were some canons of the Order of St Norbert, whose white habits lent Bellapais its other name of the White Abbey. Initially, the strictness of the abbey was exemplary, and converts were drawn from far afield.Gradually, however, worldly values began to infiltrate. The mellow beauty of the abbey was not the natural bedfellow of asceticism, as Thubron wryly observed on his first visit: ‘The spirit here feels more like a ripe fruit than a soldier of God.’ Stories of the monks’ misdeeds gathered momentum, as they took not just one, but two and three wives, and would accept only their own sons as novices, By the time the Genoese arrived in 1373, the abbey was ripe for pillaging, and much of its treasure was abducted. The Ottoman invasion of the 16th century destroyed more of the abbey, but the turks allowed the Greeks to use the church after the monks were driven out. The abbey church in fact continued to be used as the village church until 1974.Prior to the Ottoman takeover, the village of Bellapais had scarcely existed, but its numbers were swelled by the sudden influx of Greeks fleeing Kyrenia. The daughters of the monks also played their role in the growing population.

Though the church was still used, the abbey itself was a ruin from the 16th century onwards, for what the Turks did not destroy, the arriving Greeks plundered as a most convenient quarry for building their new houses. Early travelers observed cows grazing in the cloisters. The British Army made its contribution by using the place as a military hospital after 1878, cementing over the refectory floor.

This refectory, with its lovely fan-vaulted ceiling and perfect proportions, must have been one of the finest dining halls in the East. Carved into the thickness of the wall is a pulpit from which the monks were addressed throughout meals. High on the end wall, a rose window casts an attractive patterned light. On the marble lintel above the entrance, are three well-carved sets of coats of arms-the prancing lions of the Lusignans on the right, Jerusalem in the centre, and the royal quarterings of Cyprus on the left. The abbey church, which runs the length of the cloister on the opposite side of the refectory, is still used now for occasional services, and has been opened to the public again, revealing the lovely iconostasis and wooden carving on the pulpits. Pre-1974 accounts describe it as remarkably unchanged from its original 13th-century structure, apart from the iconostasis which was added by the Greek Orthodox Church in the 16th century.

There are three stairways up to the abbey roof: one is near the church entrance on the garden side, and the other two are long straight vaulted staircases running up on the church side of the cloister. One of these latter was the nightstair, used by the monks to come down from their dormitories at midnight for prayers. Today the roof forms an excellent viewing and vantage point from which to look down on the cloister with its melancholy cypresses and colourful garden, and across to the sea beyond.

From the car park behind the abbey to the east, you have the best view of the heavily ruined undercroft with its simple vaulting and damaged rose window to the north. Beside it in the southeast corner, is the chapter house, used like an administration office for the abbey, which merits closer inspection because of its eccentric Gothic stone carving, featuring wriggling sirens, monsters embracing or fighting, and a monkey and cat in the foliage of a pear tree.

The village of Bellapais still boasts a fair number of foreigners among its residents, especially in the newer villas that have grown up on the outskirts. Its closeness to Girne and natural beauty and tranquility make it an obvious choice, and its image and popularity were certainly enhanced by Lawrence Durrell’s purchase of a house here in 1953, and his subsequent book about the island and its troubles, Bitter Lomons, published in 1957. Durrell’s house still stands at the top of the steep road that runs up from the Tree of Idleness, opposite the 1953 water trough, and is now the poshest house in the village, lovingly restored and superbly maintained by the current owner. The well- designed Ambelia village self-catering complex was built nearby in 1973, and more recently for foreigners purchasing and converting traditional homes.
