Since the beginning of time, the knowledge of herbal remedies has been handed down from generation to generation. With the growth of synthetic drug manufacturing, however, the direct use of medicinal plants for a time, became a thing of the past. It is only recently that there has been an increase in interest in herbalism as a method of medicine that is safe, natural, and cheap.

The purpose of herbal remedies is to stimulate the body’s own natural healing abilities by cleansing and rebalancing. Like the synthetic drugs, many herbs contain antibacterial and antiviral properties. The advantage of herbal remedies is their ability to rapidly return the body to a state of health without the damaging side effects; unlike synthetic drugs. Herbs correctly prescribed, can be combined to target, regulate, heal or tone any organ in the body, unless the tissue has been completely destroyed.

The earliest known records of medicinal herbs date back to 3,000 BC, from northern China. The herbs identified in those records; such as, myrrh and frankincense, are still being used today. At that time, however, herbalism was often explained in terms of astrology and folklore.

From the 16th century on, the division between herbalism and allopathic medicine grew further and further apart. By the 19th century, published knowledge of herbalism had increased through advances in scientific botany, and a number of North American Indian herbal remedies had been added to the pharmacopoeia, the list of medicinal drugs. However, herbal cures were out of fashion.

Pre-packaged medicines used in orthodox medical practice are in fact extracted from traditional medicinal herbs; such as digitalis and aspirin. Research establishments have confirmed the value of the traditional uses of whole herbs.

Qualified medical herbalist combines sophisticated understanding of the human body with the knowledge of herbal pharmacopoeia. They are trained to search out the root cause of ailments and symptoms. Diarrhea, for example, may have many possible causes; among them, a viral infection, nervous stress, diet, or even contaminated water. Although many herbs will correct the symptoms, it takes an experienced practitioner to identify the cause. For this reason it is wise to consult a professional, even if you have read about the effects of a remedy and matched it to an ailment.

Edith Lingenfelter – creator, owner and webmaster of Age-old Herbs – is dedicated to heightening the awareness of the natural healing powers of “herbs” and “herbal nutrition supplements”. Air pollution includes all contaminants found in the atmosphere. These dangerous substances can be either in the form of gases or particles. Air pollution can be found both outdoors and indoors. Pollutants can be trapped inside buildings, causing indoor pollution that lasts for a long time. The sources of air pollution are both natural and human-based. As one might expect, humans have been producing increasing amounts of pollutants as time has progressed, and they now account for the majority of pollutants released into the air.

Air pollution has been a problem throughout history. Even in Ancient Rome people complained about smoke put into the atmosphere. The effects of air pollution are diverse and numerous. Air pollution can have serious consequences for the health of human beings, and also severely affects natural ecosystems. Because it is located in the atmosphere, air pollution is able to travel far off places easily. As a result, air pollution is a global problem and has been the subject of both global cooperation and conflict. Some areas now suffer more than others from air pollution. Cities with large numbers of automobiles or those that use great quantities of coal often suffer most severely from problems of air pollution.

Ancient Greek and Roman thoughts began the environmental sciences. Major philosophers advanced differing views that affected others and shield their views for years to come. The early Greeks searched for a reasonable understanding of nature. The ideas they developed influenced Europe in the future. Thales of Miletus, the founder of the Ionian school, was the initiator of Greek philosophy on the environmental sciences. The Ionian school hoped to discover the nature of the universe, and how it came about. According to Thales, everything was composed of water and the combination of the sun and water was the source of life.

Empedocles (c.493-c.433 BC) argued that the universe was composed of four elements: earth, air, fire, and water, which combined in different ways and proportions to produce different results and products. In his Memorabilia, the Greek writer, Xenophon (c.428-c.354 BC) contends that the planet earth exists for people and the climate of the earth, and the living creatures on it, are for the benefit of humanity. Xenophon says ‘The earth was created by a god for people.’ His work later influenced Christianity. In Rome, Cicero (106-43 BC) wrote that nature should be controlled by humans. According to him the earth was designed for humanity, as was each different species.

In respect of the theory of the four elements, the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC) added a fifth one: the heavens. After breaking with Plato (429-347 BC), Aristotle thoroughly investigated the natural world. He thought that the earth could be divided into sections defined by the amount of heat each received, and that people could only live in the more inhabitable areas. Aristotle accepted the theory that underground wind caused volcanoes and earthquakes. He understood the origins of rivers and believed in a pattern of rainfall. Teleology, which explained things in terms of their purpose, was a major part of Aristotle’s theory. It caused him to heavily research reproduction. Aristotle’s Historian Animalium details over 500 species, examining common characteristics between the species. Throughout the ancient periods, interest in botany grew because of its relation to medicine. Many philosophers advanced varying theories that would affect Europe in later years.

Today, there are a vast number of environmental problems, all with unique causes and consequences. Some people have said that Christianity is one of the primary causes of the degradation of the environment. Lynn White has said that the modern destruction of the environment can be attributed to Christianity. According to White the Biblical belief that nature, seen as inferior to people, can be controlled by man, has brought a lack of respect for the sacredness of the environment. White would also argue that Christianity is greatly responsible for the advent of Western science and technology. Modern technology has clearly been one of the main sources of environmental difficulties.

The Judeo-Christian notion of nature is that it is not sacred like God. Man, however, is believed by this group to be made in God’s image, and can therefore shape nature as God would. There are some who would disagree with this application of Christianity. Those who believe in “stewardship” would say that people must respect and not destroy nature, not overexploit natural resources, and allow other animals to live in nature as well. Many important theological thinkers would agree with this version of Christianity. Calvin said that man is the steward of God’s earth, and has no right to exploit and destroy it. Also, St. Thomas Aquinas said that man had some responsibility towards animals. Christianity also favors the environment in some respects. To the benefit of the environment, the religion encourages caring for other people, including those of the future, and some level of respect for the environment.

There are many different chemical substances that contribute to air pollution. These chemicals come from a variety of sources. Among the many types of air pollutants are nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, and organic compounds that can evaporate and enter the atmosphere. Air pollutants have sources that are both natural and human. Now, humans contribute substantially more to the air pollution problem. Forest fires, volcanic eruptions, wind erosion, pollen dispersal, evaporation of organic compounds, and natural radioactivity are all among the natural causes of air pollution.

Usually, natural air pollution does not occur in abundance in particular locations. The pollution is spread around throughout the world, and as a result, poses many threats. Though some pollution comes from these natural sources, most pollution is the result of human activity. The biggest causes are the use of fuels in power plants and automobiles that combust fuel. Combined, these two sources are responsible for about 90% of all air pollution in the United States. Some cities suffer severely because of heavy industrial use of chemicals that cause air pollution. Places like Mexico City and Sao Paulo have some of the most deadly pollution levels in the world.

Air pollution is responsible for major health effects. Every year, the health of countless people is ruined or endangered by air pollution. Many different chemicals in the air affect the human body in negative and destructive ways. Just how sick people will get depends on what chemicals they are exposed to, in what concentrations, and for how long. Studies have estimated that the number of people killed annually in the US alone due to environmental pollution-related diseases could be over 50,000. Older people are highly vulnerable to diseases induced by air pollution. Those with heart or lung disorders are under additional risk. Children and infants are also at serious risk. Because people are exposed to so many potentially dangerous pollutants, it is often hard to know exactly which pollutants are responsible for causing sickness. Also, because a mixture of different pollutants can intensify sickness, it is often difficult to isolate those pollutants that are at fault.

Many diseases could be caused by air pollution without their becoming apparent for a long time. Diseases such as bronchitis, lung cancer, and heart disease may all eventually appear in people exposed to air pollution. Air pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide also have harmful effects on vital systems. They can kill plants and trees by destroying their leaves, and can kill animals, especially fish in highly polluted rivers. Air pollution has many disastrous effects that need to be checked and curbed prudently. In order to accomplish this, scientists, environmentalists, and governments, are using or testing a variety of methods aimed at reducing pollution. There are two main types of pollution control. Input control involves preventing a problem before it occurs, or at least limiting the effects the process will produce. Five major input control methods exist.

Output control, the opposite method, seeks to fix the problems caused by air pollution. This usually means cleaning up an area that has been damaged by pollution. Input controls are usually more effective than output controls. Output controls are also more expensive, making them less desirable to tax payers and polluting industries. Current air pollution control efforts are not all highly effective. In wealthier countries, industries are often able to shift to methods that decrease air pollution. In the United States, for example, air pollution control laws have been successful in stopping air pollution levels from rising. However, in developing countries and even in countries where pollution is strictly regulated, much more needs to be done.

Over the past years, human energy consumption has risen dramatically. The rise in use of energy resources has meant increasing costs and the depletion of non-renewable supplies. These and other factors have led people to try to use energy in a more efficient manner. The First Law of Thermodynamics says that energy can be transferred between forms, but not created or destroyed. The Second Law of Thermodynamics says that usage of heat to perform work inevitably causes some heat to be lost to the surrounding environment. As a result, perfect efficiency in energy use is impossible.

For many things and devices that use energy, a maximum efficiency limit exists. A four-cycle internal combustion engine can achieve at most 54% efficiency, while a diesel engine can reach 56%. Steam engines only perform at 32% efficiency. In reality, engines are considerably worse than this due to designs that prevent achievement of maximum efficiency. If one includes all devices that use energy, about 85% of energy in the US is lost due to inefficient usage. Many low-efficiency devices exist because when they were developed, energy costs were very low. Only later, when energy costs rose, did it make sense to be more energy efficient.

Devices that increase efficiency often are priced higher than those that perform inefficiently. However, because less energy is used and the devices often last longer (such as fluorescent light bulbs), the efficient devices are sometimes cheaper in the long run. Governments are trying to promote efficient energy use for the sake of our future and their future generations who may be deprived by us of chances to generate air pollutants.

Dr.Badruddin Khan teaches Chemistry in the University of Kashmir, Srinagar, India.

Creating a Plan For Your Rock Garden

Botany

To make your rock garden pleasing to the eye, you should seek out the greatest variety of plants. At the same time, you have to look at keeping a unified but not uniform effect. It is possible to make the planting too wild and unkempt, but more often a rock garden looks entirely too much dressed and too well tended to represent the moods of nature. There is a certain unity and plan in the arrangement of the wild flowers of the fields, and this intangible scheme should be your guide in planning the placing.

With all this striving for variety in unity, it is a good idea to keep the flower masses of the same date of bloom somewhat apart, getting fewer of the flower combinations than is planned for a flower border. The requirements of finished pictorial composition are less desired here, the effect being decidedly more toward the very uneven and picturesque, with the tenets of the art of manmade pictures as little in evidence as possible.

Further, each plant is to be enjoyed to a degree of itself, and it is distracting to have several adjoining pockets all in best bloom at once. Without making the arrangement spotty, it is better to stage the bloom of any week rather widely over the whole garden area, leaving each flower group set off by stones, wall fountains, garden water features, large waterfalls, and foliage with quite a patch of one plant and then no bloom for a distance, as often is the case in nature.

Yet companion crops, as tiny yellow Daffodils blooming in purple Aubrietia, are always desired and welcomed. It is hopeless to explain in words how to do it and yet not overdo each requirement. Not only do you want the interests of the plants well distributed over the area of the garden, but through the weeks of the year as well. Of course the climax of flower comes in the spring months; therefore, you must put a lot of thought into how you can much to maintain interest at other times of the year.

Many plants of evergreen foliage must be used, more than half the total planting being of this nature. Little bulbs may be added rather freely as second crop in the pockets, the bloom appearing before (or after) that of the major occupant of the pocket (or as companion bloom). Interest of foliage, as of Fern, Sempervivum, or Mossy Saxifrage; of habit, as tufted mats of Diapensia or irregular stems of Cotoneaster; or in fruits, as of Cornus canadensis, can always be employed to carry on the pictures when flowers are absent.

A garden of this nature, when devoid of interest with items such as large water features, outdoor fountains, or garden statuary, indicates a poor play on the part of the planner. Yet, in the zeal of getting a wide distribution of interests both in position and time of appearance, don’t forget to produce striking flower effects at times. Use special plants for accent and attract attention to these by their own charm and their placing.

A patch of Gentiana verna is a magnificent solo requiring no orchestra of other spring flowers, nor do Primula luteola, Cyclamen count, or Viola pedata need any helpers in presenting their message. Iris cristata may walk about and mingle its bloom with that of Phlox douglasii. Yellow Alyssum, White Iberis, Pink Arabis, and Purple Aubrietia may fall down a cliff and bloom together. In this planting, you can take a mean advantage over nature in that geographic distances can be overcome and flowers of Patagonia, Oregon, Finland, and Japan may all grow happily on one small mound.

You can also use the geographic restriction to a degree, and only wild flowers of one’s own region be allowed, or of one major mountain range, as Caucasus, Alps, Rockies, or Andes. Soil conditions may always be made a control of plants to be used. The rock gardener should take advantage of strategically placing patio statuary, a patio fountain, or a garden waterfall in the area of the garden to break up the monotony of too many rocks that look similar.

These water features are also an excellent place to place specialty rocks the gardener wants to bring attention to. Botany may become a major factor, and certain families or genera may dominate, as Primrose, Pentstemon, or Phlox; or definite flower shapes or foliage habits, as bell-like flower or grassy leafage, may be made the main motive. All kinds of intricate schemes can be thus elaborated. No other kind of gardening has such possibilities of variations.

Allison Ryan is a freelance marketing writer specializing in landscape architecture and
outdoor fountains and
garden water features. In the mid-16th century, when Bila Tserkva belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a fortified castle was built; under Polish rule it was an important county town and in Cossack times the seat of the Bila Tserkva regiment (1648–74, 1702–12). Was granted Magdeburg Rights in 1620 by Sigismund III Vasa. In 1651 Bohdan Khmelnytsky signed the Treaty of Bila Tserkva with the Poles. In 1702 Bila Tserkva was the center of an anti-Polish uprising led by Semen Palii. In 1793 it became part of the Russian Empire. Its population was 17,200 in 1860 and 35,400 in 1897. Before 1914 the city was involved in food production, artisanry, and trade, particularly in agricultural products and sugar. Under the Central Rada the leaders of the Free Cossacks were stationed in Bila Tserkva; in 1918 a detachment of Sich Riflemen was formed here, and the uprising against Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky was initiated.

Under Soviet rule Bila Tserkva began to develop after the Second World War—the population was 39,000 in 1926, 47,000 in 1939, 71,000 in 1959, 109,000 in 1970, and 146,000 in 1978. Today the city manufactures farm machinery (the factory was established in 1850 and in 1957 began to specialize in building machines for the production of feed for livestock), electrical capacitors, tires, rubber-asbestos products, shoes, clothing, furniture, and reinforced-concrete products.

The city has an institute of agriculture, which began as a polytechnical institute in 1920. It had 4,000 students in 1968 and publishes scientific papers. The city also has an ethnographic museum, an oblast dramatic theater, the Saksahansky Theater, and Oleksandriia Dendrological Park, which has an area of 2,000ha, it was founded in 1793-1799 by the wife of the Polish king Franciszek Ksawery Branicki. There is a 15km coastline along which there are many 5 star hotels, apartment complexes and prestigious Cyprus property for sale. These have become even more desirable since the signing of the contracts this year for the new 1,000 birth marina sited right in the heart of the city.

Another great plus for a Cyprus villa in Limassol, which a Cyprus geographical map confirms is that it is right in the middle of the island’s southern coastline, just a 45 minute drive from either of the airports in Larnaca and Paphos. You can also travel by sea, either by your own boat to one of the marinas or the main port which is one of the Mediterranean’s busiest for both commercial and cruise ships. All these options make for easy and varied access and an ideal place to buy Cyprus property for sale.

A Cyprus villa in Limassol can be in the midst of the islands second largest city, busy as a commercial centre in its own right where the residents have the reputation of loving fun which is reflected in its cosmopolitan atmosphere. The nightlife is renowned and there are many tavernas and restaurants as well as nightclubs. There is also great shopping, which will hit another level when the new shopping mall is finished, it will be the islands largest – four times as big as the one in Nicosia! This is scheduled for completion in 2008.

That is the urban picture for a Cyprus villa in Limassol, the complete alternative is just a stones throw away. Head out of the city and into the mountains and there is a whole different world. The foothills have beautiful scenery, through vineyards and wine producing villages that still have sea views. Keep on going and there are numerous sleepy little villages to discover just off the main roads along rough tracks. A Cyprus geographical map will help to find these and also the dams which have been established to catch the waters (and snow in winter) running off the mountains, the largest is at Germasogeia, which is a popular fishing spot for trout and other species.

The two largest festivals of Cyprus take place in Limassol, the pre-Lent Carnival and the September Wine Festival. The ancient theatre at Kourion is often used for dramatic and musical productions and there are many other archaeological sites to be found. All the usual water sports are available on the coast as well as mountain pursuits such as hiking, rambling, horse riding, cycling, angling, bird watching, botany and in the winter – skiing and snow boarding!

A Cyprus Villa in Limassol and Cyprus property for sale can be found in whichever place you feel happiest – urban or country, coastal or inland and the great thing is that both are really close to each other and of course the Cyprus weather means you can actually enjoy all the activities or just sit and watch!

Kate Deas-Smith recommends a Cyprus villa in Limassol as great Cyprus property for sale.

Six Science Activities to do Before Spring Break

Botany

Dna

Geographical Areas

Hair Samples

Mid Point

Project Students

Ratios

School Year

Science Class

Science Project

Water Samples

Spring Break is a vacation that comes in the middle of the school year. Before students leave for their break teachers need to stimulate their minds and recap what they have learned up to this point in the school year.

By: Madeline Binder

eak is usually offered to students about the mid point of the year. This break can last anywhere from four days to a full week. While students are pretty worn out by school by this break, teachers still need to challenge their minds up to the last day of school before spring break. One way to do this is to have students complete a mid-year project. #1 – The Science of Me The first project is “the Science of Me” project. In this project the student will examine some element of themselves in a science report. It is a good idea to link this project with a concept that has been covered in the textbook during the first half of the school year. For example, if your class has been studying DNA then the student can extract DNA from tissue or hair samples from their own body. They can then write up a report on how they extracted the DNA and how they interpreted the results. #2 – Classmate Profiles Another interesting project is to conduct a survey science project of the class. This project will focus on something that has been covered in science class during the first half of the year. For example, if the class has been studying genotypes then a class genotype project can be completed. Each student will be asked to create genetic Punnet squares for one trait, such as eye color or hair color. All of the findings can then be pooled together to create a class project. #3 – Environmental Chemistry It has been discovered that the chemical ratios found in local soil and water samples are also present in life forms that live in the area. In this project students will start by taking soil and water samples from their neighborhoods. They will then conduct a chemical analysis of these samples. Then the students will provide hair and saliva samples, which will also be chemically analyzed. The results will be compared to see if people really can be profiled and tied to specific geographical areas based on their chemical ratios. #4 – Rock Collections Earth science classes can assign a rock collection project to their students. Students will need to collect rock and mineral samples from their areas. They will then need to identify the rock, its formation and its morphology. The rocks will then need to be displayed and labeled. Students will then supplement the collection with a report that provides details on each sample. #5 – Taxidermy Projects Advanced biology courses can assign a taxidermy project to its students. For this project students will need to find a dead bird or other dead animal (road kill) that has not decomposed to far. They then need to follow taxidermy procedures to clean, preserve and stuff the animal. They will then need to complete a report on the animal that they found and stuffed. It must be made apparent that the only animals that can be used for this project will be ones that have died of natural causes. #6 – Plant Collections Science classes that are studying botany can complete plant collections for their mid-year project. These projects will have students go out into the field and collect leaves, stems and flowers for their collection. The students will then need to identify the items that they have found and create a labeled display. They will then need to provide a written report on their collection, including a narrative of what they learned as they completed their project.
I have spent the majority of my life studying and promoting education. I have discovered that students can achieve amazing goals if given the right support and encouragement.

Private School Alternative to Traditional Daycares

Botany

Child Development And Education

Childhood Education

Confusion

Dallas Ft

Founders

Globe

Insight

Learning Materials

Montessori Method

Varsha

This article explores the offerings of Castle Montessori private schools in comparison to traditional day care settings. Learn how a Montessori environment can develop a "love of learning" in your child's formative years.

By: Castle Montessori Schools

There are many high-quality daycare centers throughout the Dallas-Ft.Worth area where creative daily programs are being implemented. The most significant difference between those programs and the Castle Montessori Schools is that Castle Montessori Schools follow a single, time-tested, proven philosophy of child development and education.

At Castle Montessori Schools the Montessori method is used as a complete and integrated approach to childhood education based on the life work of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori method often causes confusion or misunderstanding among parents and the founders and faculty of Castle Montessori are on a mission to provide a clear understanding of Montessori education to parents.

Dr. Montessori possessed incredible insight, and her scientific observations of child development have proven accurate both over the years and around the globe. In keeping with her observations and insights, Castle Montessori programs nurture the true potential of each child in carefully prepared classrooms with a full complement of specialized learning materials which simply do not exist in most daycare settings. Parents seeking a Castle Montessori education for their child will quickly notice the schools offer an individualized program, geared to the child’s natural interests.

“Many daycares teach concepts in a group setting, using a teacher-driven model to determine which concepts will be taught. We however, espouse a very different approach. The Montessori method encourages the child to choose for himself which concepts he will explore, and provides materials to assist him in his individual exploration of those concepts,” said Varsha Patel, Castle Montessori Founder and Head of School.

All good centers provide opportunities for children to learn the rudimentary concepts of counting, colors and the letters of the alphabet. A Castle Montessori environment allows a child to discover the foundations of reading, writing and arithmetic, and so much more. A child at Castle Montessori is exposed to concepts of zoology, botany, geometry, geography, algebra, history, science, chemistry, biology, art appreciation and expression, and music, all at a level that is inviting, approachable and understandable to the young child. In addition to the academic opportunities in the Castle Montessori classroom, children are encouraged to participate in daily activities such as preparing food, washing dishes, mopping floors and dusting shelves. Children experience the self worth that comes from being a meaningful and contributing member of the classroom community.

Patel said the schools’ teachers or Guides, as they are called, observe and facilitate each child’s discoveries during their educational journey. Patel sees the program foster a deep sense of independence in children. This autonomy leads to intentional learning through use of the materials and social interactions with both adults and other children.

“By design our schools do more than care for young children until they are old enough for kindergarten. We have created a program that not only meets the physical and emotional needs of a young child, but is also specifically designed to meet the educational and social needs of the whole person during the formative years of childhood.”

Patel agrees with Dr. Montessori’s assessment of the value in providing an early education for children. “The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man’s intelligence itself, his greatest implement is being formed,” Montessori wrote.

According to Patel, respect is a very important part of a Castle Montessori education. The faculty and staff model respect in a number of ways. Respect for the child’s desire and capacity to learn is demonstrated by filling the room with beautiful and well maintained materials. Real, child-sized items are used in place of plastic replicas. The adults show respect to the children by treating them with kindness, while firmly expecting appropriate behavior. The children are given many opportunities to practice the skills necessary to show respect through caring for the room and the materials in it, and treating one another with kindness and respect.

“During the daily work time, a child may not become involved with another child or his work, unless she is invited to do so. Each child is free to work with any material (at her ability level and once it has been introduced by the teacher), but she must treat it carefully and return it to it’s proper place on the shelf ready for the next person when she is finished, ” Patel said.

Children have the opportunity to learn by working alone, in a small group, or by observing others as they work.

Younger children look to the older children as models of social courtesy, and someone other than the Guide to whom they can turn to for help with their work. The older children feel a sense of responsibility for the younger children, and solidify newly acquired skills when they help younger children just beginning to learn those skills.

In addition, Patel said the older children learn to be patient and tolerant of others, especially as the younger children learn accepted social behaviors. This also fosters leadership skills in the older children at such a young age.

“They are often so good at buffering hurt feelings or helping a new child become adjusted to school. Older children really love to share what they know with the younger ones, and by doing so reinforce their learning, and by watching the older children work, the young ones are challenged and look forward to their future work activities,” Patel said.

Patel said she is thrilled that parents and children have found each Castle Montessori School to be a beautiful landmark in their respective communities.

“While the beauty of our school buildings in themselves is certainly nice to enjoy and my husband Vikas and I spent countless hours in the design of the buildings, we are even more thrilled with the investment we have made in our teaching staff. Our teachers have earned their certification by passing rigorous exams and working under the tutelage of experts in the field.
